SOUL FOOD

Next Wednesday we are going to have our second dinner and conversation night which we are calling Soul Food. The first one was a lot of fun so I hope you can join us for this one on Wed. Oct. 25 from 6:15-7:30. We are going to look at clips from the movie, Crash, and talk about what it says about our culture, race, stereotypes and our faith. It is a great movie that is really powerful and has a lot in it that makes for a good discussion.

We will also be having dinner together - I am trying to decide between Potbelly's, Chinese Food or Buffalo Joes. If you know you can come, let me know what your preference is. If you're not sure till Wed that's ok too - show up and there will be plenty of food for all.

Hug someone today

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vr3x_RRJdd4
Sometimes, a hug is all what we need. Free hugs is a real life controversial story of Juan Mann, A man whos sole mission was to reach out and hug a stranger to brighten up their lives. In this age of social disconnectivity and lack of human contact, the effects of the Free Hugs campaign became phenomenal. As this symbol of human hope spread accross the city, police and officials ordered the Free Hugs campaign BANNED. What we then witness is the true spirit of humanity come together in what can only be described as awe inspiring.

One funny, One serious

Did any of you follow that story about the school shooting in the Amish school? If you went to New Orleans we talked about it some - it was an amazing lesson in what forgiveness is all about. If you're interested in reading a pretty good article about it go to: http://www.beliefnet.com/blogs/godspolitics/2006/10/diana-butler-bass-what-if-amish-were.html

Then if you love Steve Carell and Steve Colbert on the Daily Show together then what could be better then the two of them discussing world religions: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XgHfq0epSJg

Check it out - post your comments on either!

Starbury

Okay, I think this is really cool:
http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=2551942

NBA Star Stephon Marbury teamed with a shoe company to make basketball shoes that sell for $14.98. He wants kids to stop feeling the pressure to pay obscene amounts of money for a pair of shoes, and to see how much it really costs to make them. I think Stephon put it best himself: "Two hundred to buy a pair of sneakers, that's groceries for the week."

He'll be wearing them throughout the 2006-2007 season to help promote them.

Servants in October

Sunday, October 15th – Girls/Guys Night
Brooke has rejected my proposal for a “Guys and Dolls” night, so we will be sticking with the traditional Guys and Girls night, wherein the Guys do something with Rob and the Girls do something with Brooke. We will find a use for the original choreography I developed at a later date.
-Guys will be learning Rob's top-secret beef jerky recipe and playing video games at the church.
-Girls will be going to Ethel's Chocolate Lounge for chocolate fondue - meet at the church at 1:15.

Monday, October 16th – Whirlyball
Whirlyball has been called the “Ultimate Sport” by some (me). In laymen’s terms, Whirlyball is the art of driving a bumper car and whipping a waffle ball at a basketball backboard with a plastic handheld scoop. If this sounds like more hand-eye coordination than you can handle, you can always do what I do: drive around in circles backwards until you get dizzy and hit a wall. This is an off-site event. We’ll be leaving the church at 5:30pm to account for horrendous rush hour traffic. Please RSVP as soon as you know if you'll be attending

Monday, October 23rd – Political Awareness & Involvement
Can you name the four branches of the U.S. Government? Do you know how to apply for the Electoral College? What games does Congress play when they are at recess? Did you realize that all three of those questions were rife with error? Regardless of your answers, you should come to this Servants meeting, where we’ll be discussing politics. We will answer the following questions: Should you care? If so, how much should you care? And, once you have determined whether you care and by how much, should you actually do anything about it?

Wednesday, October 25th – Soul Food
Soul Food is Servants with a focus on in-depth conversations and eating food. However, no matter how spirited the conversation becomes, please do not speak while eating; it’s gross and turns me off my appetite. We will meet at 6:30 in the Servants room.
